GNOME 3 est la dernière mise à jour de GNOME, l'un des nombreux environnement graphique du système opérationnel GNU/Linux.

GNOME Shell est la nouvelle interface graphique de GNOME 3 (GUI) et remplace Gnome Panel de GNOME 2.
La distribution Ubuntu a sorti Unity, un autre shell de GNOME 3, comme interface graphique par défaut depuis Ubuntu 11.04, mais bien évidemement les utilisateur-trice-s de Ubuntu peuvent installer et utiliser également GNOME Shell.

Ces deux interfaces frappent par un changement de contexte graphique ; c'est une nouvelle organisation visuelle du bureau. Un lanceur d'application est introduit sur le bureau, l'affichage des information est rationalisé. Tant Ubuntu que GNOME cherchent à offrir une interface graphique simplifiée et orientée vers l'informatique mobile; des netbooks aux tablettes tactiles.

Pour les utilisateur-trice -s de GNOME c'est une nouvelle expérience tant visuelle, que dans l'organisation et l'accès aux informations. C'est également un profond changement culturel par rapport à GNOME 2.
En tant que nouvelle interface, Gnome Shell a déjà été beaucoup commenté, critiqué, détesté ou adoré.
Je ne vais donner de nouvelles explications sur le fonctionnement de GNOME Shell Sur le web, il y a déjà énormément d'information sur le sujet. Je veux simplement livrer mes impressions sur cette interface.
Comme je suis très intéressée par les interfaces, la communication humains - machines, j'ai voulu tester GNOME Shell pour me faire ma propre opinion.

D'emblée j'ai été impressionnée par son design, l'organisation des fonctionnalités et la simplicité avec laquelle on passe d'un niveau d'information à un autre. Dès le départ, j'ai compris intuitivement comme naviguer dans l'interface et utiliser ses fonctionnalités, ce qui n’était pas forcément très évident avec Unity que j'avais testé auparavant.

Ce qui m'a frappé à l'amorce de GNOME Shell, c'est sa sobriété et sa fluidité : L'information est organisée par mode, comme par couches, et on passe aisément d'un mode à l'autre pour accéder à différentes fonctionnalités : la clef de cette organisation est la simplicité ; cette interface permet d’appréhender les fonctions du système différemment et ainsi de mieux comprendre comment les informations sont organisées. Mon hypothèse est que si l'on comprend mieux comment sont gérées les différents niveaux d'information, on utilise mieux son système. C'est ce qui rend cette interface belle et fonctionnelle.
Moins d'information parasitaire : L'accès à certaines fonctionnalités sont masquées, et activées par des raccourcis, au gré des besoins, ce qui a été également critiqué.

Le caractère à priori peu configurable et peu personnalisable de GNOME Shell comme de Unity sont sujets à controverse. Les utilisateur-trice- s de GNU/Linux et de Unix sont attachés à la flexibilité d'interfaces très personnalisables. Ils ne sont pas prêts de sacrifier cette flexibilité sur l'autel de la simplicité et l'efficience.
De nombreuses extensions sont ainsi développées pour rajouter d'autres fonctionnalités ou pour personnaliser ses thèmes, son écran de connexion, ses fenêtres, etc.

GNOME Shell the graphical interface for the new GNOME desktop Environment

GNOME 3 is the new version of GNOME, one of the numerous desktop environment for the GNU/Linux operating system. GNOME 3 replace GNOME 2 and GNOME Shell is the new graphical user interface (GUI)of GNOME 3 and replace GNOME Panel of GNOME 2.
The Ubuntu distro has release Unity, another shell for GNOME 3, which is designed to be the new GUI by default for Ubuntu version since 11.04. Of course, Ubuntu users can easily install and choose GNOME Shell as well.
Both shells provide a new graphical context and an new way of organizing information and an apps launcher is added on the desktop. GNOME as well as Ubuntu want to develop a graphical interface designed for mobile computing; from netbooks to digital tablets.
For GNOME users, this is a new visual experience as well as new way for accessing and organizing information on their computer. This is also a deep cultural change for those used to GNOME 2.
As a new graphical interface, GNOME Shell has been commented a lot, criticized, either hated or loved.
I won't give here a new explanation or comment on how GNOME Shell is working. The web provides lot of accessible information on the subject.
I want to give my personal feed-back about GNOME Shell .
As I am very much interested in digital interfaces, human – machine communication …. I was curious to test GNOME Shell and make my own opinion on it.
As soon as I have launched GNOME Shell I have been very much impressed by its design, its organization and the simplicity in which we switch between levels of information. Immediately I have intuitively understood how to navigate et use the functionalities, which has not been obvious with Unity, which I tested before.
First, I have noticed its sobriety and fluidity. Information is displayed and organized in different modes like in different levels. Simplicity is the key organization of this display. It makes it intuitively easier to understand and switch between functions. And then to better understand how information is organized within the system. My point is if we better understand how information is organized in the system, we are more efficient using it. This is what's make this interface fluid and beautiful.
No more parasitic information; functions are hidden by default and activated with keyboard shortcuts, at users needs, which has also been criticized.
But we have to say that GNOME Shell and Unity, are not much natively customizable; This lack of flexibility has been much commented and criticized. GNU/Linux and Unix users love their customizable interfaces. They are not ready to give up this flexibility in the name of simplicity and efficiency. That's why a lot of extensions are provided to add functionalities or to personalize and customize its desktop; themes, icons, display manager, windows ...

«Comme vous le savez peut-être, il était prévu (article de la Tribune de Genève) que toutes les écoles primaires du canton de Genève passent exclusivement à Ubuntu à la rentrée 2007.»

Un incroyable manque de connaissance , des erreurs dans l'installation et des choix douteux ...mènent à des difficultés d'utilisation quotidiennes qui déprécie l'OS libre.
Ubuntu au DIP de Genève n'est pas franchement « happy inside » !

The Education departement of Geneva district, had planned to migrate from Windows to Ubuntu on all computers of the first degree schooling.
Sadly, bad choices, and a understandable lack of knowledge from those who were in charge of the migration, lead to great difficulties in the day to day use of the open source system.
Ubuntu does not seem to be « happy inside » in the DIP department !
